There are times when we all feel a bit lost, restless, and discontent, or feel as though nothing is in our control. As time goes on your body and mind can become impacted. The word ‘nourish’ means ‘feed, cherish’. Nourishing your soul means to feed it mindful, positive thinking and intentional self-care. Taking time each day to nourish your soul will help you maintain the health and balance of your life.
Here are 10 ways to help you nourish your soul.
Be quiet
Shhh… stop talking. Turn off the tv, podcast, video or mobile phone. Experience the quiet. Take a few moments to just be still, to listen to your thoughts, or even just become as thoughtless as possible. If you want to extend on this concept then try meditating – the more you practice meditating, the easier it becomes and the more beneficial. If you’re a beginner, here is a meditation guide to try – Leo Babauta Zen Habits.
Just breathe
Conscious breathing is a way to reap an array of physical and emotional benefits. Breathing releases toxins, increases muscle and can strengthen your immune system. It also helps you to focus, feel less stressed and relaxes your muscles. To breathe well; inhale through your nose and out through your mouth. Allow your belly to expand. Hold your breath for at least three seconds before exhaling.
Have a laugh
Ignite your day by having a laugh and engaging with your sense of humour. We’ve all heard the saying ‘laughter is the best medicine’. In fact laughter has been shown to be good for your vascular and immune system, along with helping to lower levels of stress and anxiety. One of our favourite ways to do this is through laughter yoga. We find it helps to recharge our body and mind along with helping to induce calmness, focus and energy.
Get back to nature
Spending time in nature among trees, flowers, grass and sunshine. Helping you to relax, de-stress and feel nourished to your soul. If you can’t get out into nature all the time, then try listening to relaxing, calming sounds of nature. This can be anything from rain falling, birds chirping, whale song, or whatever works for you! Say YES to the things you love
Saying yes to the things we love ensures we’re doing things that make us feel happy, excited and fulfilled. In times of stress this could be as simple as catch up with friends over zoom, or a few hours taken out to watch your favourite movie at home. Doing something you love helps get your brain back on track and help us to focus on what truly matters.
Volunteer
Giving back to others is one of the greatest ways to nourish your soul. Whether you give back with your time, money or energy, this simple act will make a difference in your life as well as others. There are so many charities to get involved with, it’s just a mater of finding something that you connect with.
Think positively
Practicing positivity can be tricky sometimes, but finding the positive aspect to what happens in our lives can be the difference between feeling happiness and gratitude as opposed to stress and anxiety.
For example, don’t think of going to the supermarket as a chore, instead think of it as an opportunity to discover new and exciting ingredients to get creative with in your meals this week.
Nourishment for your soul
Ensuring you are getting a healthy balanced diet with enough fruits and vegetables is essential to ensuring your body and mind are operating an optimum levels.
Daydream
Let your mind wander. While visualisation is an intentional focus on what you desire, daydreaming is a way for your soul to show you what it wants for you.
Say affirmations
Nothing beats a good affirmation. Here are some of our favourites:
“I allow my soul to find healing”
“I answer to the calling of my soul”
“I am choosing to focus on my wellness”
“I prioritise my selfcare”
“If I set my intentions and work towards them, there is nothing that I can’t accomplish.”
When you take time to intentionally nurture your soul, you create space for positive things to come into your life, and you become more resilient when life gets difficult. In other words, you’ll improve the quality of your life which is something we all strive for.
