Good nutrition is essential to maintaining healthy skin. Although it's impossible to prevent the natural ageing process, good nutrition can help keep your skin radiant and healthy.
Our skin is made up of multiple layers - it's the largest organ in our bodies! Often we focus on the topical layers of skin health, nourishing with oils, serums, and creams but just as important is how we feed our skin from the inside out.
Here are four super nutrients that help your skin to glow
WATER - Keeping your skin hydrated
Okay, it's not technically a nutrient but it is super important! Our skin needs a steady supply of water to keep it hydrated, plump and glowing.
Fluids also help flush out harmful substances from the body and prevent them from being excreted through the skin where they can do damage. Water ensures that our cells work as well as possible including our skin cells.
To work out how much water you need to drink daily, you can use this formula. Your bodyweight in kg x 0.033 = how many litres of water you should be drinking every day.
ANTIOXIDANTS - Fight free radical damage
Free radicals are molecules with an unpaired electron, they search the body for a pair but in the process cause damage to cells, proteins (such as collagen, a protein in our skin), and DNA. The build-up of this damage over time is one of the key contributors to aging.
Antioxidants help protect our cells by fighting free radicals. This can help prevent sun damage and slow the process of aging on the skin.
VITAMIN C - Collagen production
We know we need plenty of vitamin C to keep our immunity functioning normally, but it is also a powerful antioxidant. It is necessary for producing natural collagen and can speed up wound healing.
You can get vitamin C from fresh fruit and vegetables like berries, citrus, kiwifruit, and broccoli.
VITAMIN A - Sun protection and skin repair
Vitamin A plays a role in protecting our skin from the sun and repairing our skin. It promotes collagen production which keeps our skin firm and wrinkle-free. It has also been associated with decreasing the occurrence of acne and keeping it looking vibrant.
Orange fruit and vegetables such as kumara, carrots, and pumpkins are high in Vitamin A as well as dark green vegetables.
