With water quality and intensive dairying again in the spotlight, food innovator Michael Mayell wants farmers to embrace a greener future by growing sustainable nutrient rich plants to provide New Zealand plant powders globally.
Mayell, the man behind Cookie Time’s famous chocolate chip cookie, is the founder of Nutrient Rescue, a plant-based wholefood company dedicated to helping shift our agriculture industry to producing food in a way that does much less harm to the planet.
Nutrient Rescue’s Green Shot combines dried wheat grass, barley grass and other greens. A teaspoonful is equivalent to three serves of veges. Its Red Shot combines dried blackcurrants and boysenberries to boost antioxidant and vitamin intake...

The three tenants of Victoria Street’s Gourmet Hub are making the most of the container food centre’s colourful new ingredients, green and red wholefood plant powders from Nutrient Rescue.
The Christchurch start-up’s food products are free of meat, dairy, gluten, added salt and alcohol, and contain only naturally occurring sugars found in wholefoods. Nutrient Rescue’s pure New Zealand plant powders are designed to make it easy to boost your daily intake of fruit and veges.
As well as a nutrition and flavour boost for the shots and juices of Darren Fabri (centre), and the innovative cuisine of Phil Watkins (right), the powders are bringing a splash of colour to the vegan smoothies of Vanessa Clements (left).
Vanessa sells Underground coffee and nutritious snacks as well as smoothies from her Coffee Traders container. Her customers love the vibrant colour of her smoothies, with the Nutrient Rescue green powder complementing the nuts and seasonal fruit and vegetables in her blend.

An old hand in the New Zealand food industry is going green with his new venture. Michael Mayell, founder of Christchurch-based Cookie Time, has launched Nutrient Rescue, a healthfood company dedicated to increasing the amount of veges and fruit in our diet.
Mayell also hopes success for the new company, which sources all its ingredients from New Zealand growers, will help propel a shift in our agriculture industry away from dairying to growing organic crops for export as plant powders.

When a health scare prompted New Zealand food entrepreneur Michael Mayell to cull animal products from his diet, he looked around and thought, “Where is the vegan-friendly convenience food?”
Finding none, he set up Nutrient Rescue, a healthfood company dedicated to increasing the amount of veges and fruit in our diet. All ingredients are 100% grown in New Zealand, are free of meat, dairy, gluten, added salt and alcohol, are organic where possible, and contain only naturally occurring sugars found in wholefoods.
